Book Review: Phoenix and Ashes

Phoenix and Ashes by Mercedes Lackey (Elemental Masters Series)

I enjoy this series. The Elemental Masters series is a set of re-tellings of fairy tales. So far, there’s been Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and now Cinderella. But these aren’t your mother’s fairy tales. All the the early 1900’s they deftly weave magic and romance into the midst of changing society of England in World War I. The main characters Eleanore and Reggie are trapped in circumstances that many would consider Hell. Reggie was shot down over the fields of Germany and is suffering from injuries and shellshock. Eleanore is trapped by her step-mother’s blood magic in her own home. Turned into a virtual slave, it will take all her strength and will to take control of the magic she didn’t know she possessed and break free. I highly recommend this one.
